A VENETIAN CANAL — NIGHT, ORNATE CARNIVAL MASKS FLOATING ON THE WATER LIKE LILY PADS. The four stand among lantern-lit gondolas; Cosmo lifts a carnival mask and holds it beside his own face, not over it. The canal is full of masks — dozens drifting, beautiful, empty. The easy read is that masks are dishonest. But Cosmo never puts his on. He holds it out, examines it, keeps his real face plainly in view.
