The twist is what 'The Village' actually points to. A newcomer reads the glowing sign and thinks it names the buildings — the stalls, the lanterns, the clay walls. But the buildings are just buildings. The thing the sign truly names is the small, ordinary scene happening directly beneath it: an old resident turning toward a nervous arrival and a curious astronaut, and the three of them making room.
