The four friends stand on a high stone ledge, and Stella holds a glowing golden thread. Outside, the sun is doing nothing special — plain white daylight. But it strikes the rose window and walks out the other side as a hundred colors thrown across the stone. The cathedral is making a builder's argument: the light did not change, the window did the work. Someone, centuries ago, cut and set every pane so that ordinary light would arrive as wonder.
